Abstract

Engineering research techniques were applied to 14 intersection type collision experiments for the purpose of studying motorists' interaction with the car during these hazardous exposures. The methodology consisted of experiments conducted at four different speeds of impact for each of three positions of impact along the side of the struck car. Replication of data was provided for additional experiments repeating two of the twelve basic exposure conditions. Kinematics and accompanying force data for motorists during their collision event were recorded. Advanced photographic procedures provided accurate presentation of motorists' movements throughout the collision event, even during motorists" ejection from the car. The protective aspects of various restraining devices were presented and in particular those concerned with protection of infant and child motorists.
