Abstract

A median crossing collision involved a new passenger vehicle with three occupants and a truck with an occupant. The passenger vehicle crossed the median out of control and was impacted by the truck. The truck driver had neither time nor distance to more than initiate an avoidance maneuver.

The two basic problems in the case were (1) the identification of the driver and (2) the reason for the origination of the collision course. Both problems were brought to reasonable explanation. Engineering and operations testing were carried out to understand the tire failure to which the collision course was traced.

Background study included vehicle analysis, traffic and highway engineering, automotive engineering, human engineering, post mortem examination of decedents, medical records, psychiatric interviews, social and personal histories.

A method of study developed for research on fatal highway collisions is reported in the context of a case report for the first time. Thus the case is a means by which to appraise the methodology. The view of the material develops a comprehension of the individual case which differs markedly from the image of the traffic death problem.
