Abstract

Early 2014 CROW Fietsberaad launched a discussion paper in The Netherlands on the implementation of bicycle lanes. Flanders and the Netherlands, after all, are filled with a great diversity of bicycle lanes and narrow bicycle suggestion lanes. The concrete proposals and a number of practical situations were then investigated on 23 locations, the largest study ever conducted of bicycle lanes in the Netherlands. The estimates and assumptions in the discussion paper were tested in video-observation research. The research brings us knowledge about the position of the cyclist with respect to each other and overtaking vehicles. The result is a research report, customized recommendations and a web tool. CROW Fietsberaad put these results to the public at the end of 2015 and tours with them for the spreading of the recommendations.
