Abstract

Infrastructure is entering an era of crisis according to this analysis of governmental funding for United States roads, bridges and highways. The author describes the fifteen major categories that comprise government infrastructure, using a "report card assessment" to point out the impact that the current fiscal crisis is having upon the infrastructure. The quality of infrastructure is linked to economic development, and without effective national support, both infrastructure and economic development programs will suffer. The author contends that government funding must be targeted for infrastructure projects from less important operation programs with limited or special interest constituencies.
