Abstract

This article examines the history and rebuilding of the infamous Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge in Washington State. The original bridge achieved worldwide notoriety November 7, 1940 when it plunged 190 feet into the water, just four months after its official opening. The second version of the bridge was thicker and wider. It also used deeper, truss-type girders that allowed the winds to pass through.
