Abstract

This article summarizes "Guidelines for the Design and Application of Speed Humps," a draft proposed recommended practice of the International Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). The recommended practice considers speed humps a roadway geometric design feature intended to physically reduce vehicle speeds. Other types of geometric design features that are not addressed in this document, but which could be considered in a residential traffic management program, are raised intersections, rumble strips, chokers, traffic circles, median barriers, diverters, left-turn channelization, and street closures. Geometric design features should only be installed after less restrictive strategies have been considered and, in no event, should their use encourage the use of streets for play.
