Abstract

This article discusses the impact that the current telecommunications boom is having on public works departments. As the telecommunications industry experiences rapid expansion, there has been, and will continue to be, the need to lay new fiber optic lines under public streets and disrupt traffic. For a variety of reasons, inner cities will bear the brunt of this disruption. The author also discusses the results of a "Telecommunications Summit" convened to allow public works officials and telecommunications executives discuss issues of concern to both groups. 31 cities and 11 telecommunications companies were represented and the meeting was deemed a success.
