Abstract

The incidence rate for injuries causing more than three days' absence is an imperfect measure of safety performance and its use sometimes causes confusion. A simple model based on the relationship between injury rate and injury severity can help to clarify the situation. Examples of the usefulness of the model are given and some implications of its are discussed briefly.
