Abstract

The number of deaths reported by the major cities in the Pacific Division for this week was 26 percent above the median. This excess was associated with the unusual heat wave which struck southern California the last day of August. Although relief from the extreme heat came at the end of the first week of September, a large number of deaths were recorded for the week ended September 17 because figures are compiled by date of receipt of the death certificate in the city registration office. There is usually a delay of 1 to 3 days between the death and receipt of the certificate. In addition, since registration offices in California closed Friday, September 9, for Admission Day, this week's reports included an extra day's receipts.
