Abstract

Education, in a variety of forms and for a variety of purposes, has played a role in federally sponsored youth employment efforts since the 1930s. The purpose of this historical review is to describe educational components of major youth employment programs from the New Deal through the Youth Employment and Demonstration Projects Act (YEDPA) of 1977. Attention is given to historical continuities as well as major shifts in policy and administrative strategy. Particular attention is given to the transition from school to work and the role education has played in this transition.
