Abstract

Frequencies of sport activities in the elderly were drawn from a survey on impairment carried out on a disproportionally stratified random sample of 480 men and women over 65 years of age. 43% of the women and 49% of the men aged 65 to 75 years indicated a sportive activity at least once a week. The same held true for 17% of the women and 27% of the men over 85 years of age. Elderly men had more possibilities to find adequate sportive activity without relying on organized senior-groups than women. Elderly men also seemed to care more intensively for physical activity than women. The term "sport" is interpreted by the elderly in different ways. Correlations of the frequencies of such activities with other factors are therefore unrealistic.
