Abstract

Downhill ski design has undergone significant change in recent years. The rapid introduction of shaped skis into the market has meant there have been few research studies into their effect on skier injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the types and severity of downhill skiing injuries influenced by ski shape at the Perisher Blue Ski Resort, NSW, Australia, during the 2000 ski season. Data collection was via questionnaire at the Perisher Blue Medical Centre. Two hundred and fifty-one questionnaires were completed. Of the 197 questionnaires suitable for analysis, 74 skiers used conventional skis and 123 used shaped skis. Ski shape was found to influence the location, type and severity of downhill skiing injuries.
