Abstract

The subject of child sexual abuse is taboo in India. There is a conspiracy of silence. Large percentage of people feel this is a western problem. Part of the reason of course lies in a traditional conservative family and community structure that does not talk about sex and sexuality at all. In May 2012, India's parliament took a major step by passing the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Under the law, all forms of child sexual abuse are now specific criminal offenses for the first time in India.
