Abstract

Domestic abuse is a subject that is difficult to deal with for most people. Health professionals often lack confidence when approaching the subject, due to various reasons, such as lack of training, not knowing how to manage the situation or how to communicate with the survivor. However, it is vitally important that awareness is increased at an individual and practice level, so that more survivors can get the help, support and protection they need. This article aims to educate the reader about: what comes under the umbrella term 'domestic abuse'; how it presents, particularly in general practice; how to break down barriers to disclosure; and what resources are available to help.
