Abstract

In the Kingdom where Gross National Happiness may be its most precious commodity, there is a growing awareness of the individual and communal toll that unmet mental health needs bring to bear on Bhutanese society. Mental illness is becoming a public health issue in Bhutan. There has long been a tendency to neglect the care of persons with mental disorder in the general setting; the reason being the lack of understanding and poor management of mental illness by the health professionals and people. This article addresses contextual necessities in improving understanding in order to strengthen conceptualization, treatment and management of mental health needs in Bhutan.
