Abstract

A roundabout is an unsignalized intersection that operates by giving priority to vehicles already in the circular lanes, thus, proper usage can result in a relatively high reduction of traffic accidents, travel times, and emissions. However, a shortcoming exists in lowered consideration to safety of pedestrians. The purpose of this research is providing a method for estimating staggered crosswalk distance for vulnerable users and pedestrian signal operation for roundabouts located around school zones or silver zones. Distance is estimated using poisson distribution and performance results for pedestrian signal operation is analyzed by using VISSIM. The results show that a proper distance between a staggered crosswalk for four-lane approach with two-lane roundabout is estimated at 12~24m, and its recommended cycle time for pedestrian signal time is in the range of 80~110 seconds when total number of approaching vehicles for the whole intersection is 1,000~3,000 vehicle/h. The performance results of VISSIM show a delay reduction per vehicle from 98.3 to 31.5 seconds (67.9%). The total approaching vehicles at 2,600 vehicle/h gives the highest delay in reduction per vehicle from 192.5 to 38.9 seconds (79.8%).
