Abstract

The construction industry in Singapore has been experiencing an upward trend of fatal accidents despite measures undertaken by the authorities. The objective of this study is to find out how contractors in Singapore view safety culture and whether they know what constitutes a safety culture. The results are discussed and recommendations are made on improving the safety performance. The findings suggest that contractors understand the importance of a safety culture but do not have the right mindset or attitude towards implementing it. They believe that rules and regulations are the guidelines towards safety performance and strictly adhere by its minimum standards.
