Abstract

A study was carried out in Baghdad of driver behavior when approaching signalized junctions at the onset of amber. The surveys undertaken made extensive use of video camera techniques to assist in the collection of a comprehensive set of variables thought to influence driver behavior. It was found that numerous parameters, in addition to approach speed and distance from the stop line, affected driver behavior. A Discriminant Model was successfully calibrated that was capable of evaluating the influece of the different variables on the choice adopted by the drivers. The model was then used in a predictive mode to reflect the expected results of the implementation of alternative policies.
