Abstract

The concept of traffic barriers is defined as the sum of inhibiting effects upon pedestrian behavior resulting from the impact of traffic conditions. The existence and importance of traffic barriers to pedestrian movement arising from traffic have been recognized for a long time. Researchers have found it difficult to measure the traffic barrier effects as they are dependent on pedestrian behavior which cannot be easily predicted. Some of the more promising methods include the use of crossing ratio measures and perception surveys. These methods can provide valuable information about scheme performance as it effects pedestrians.
