Abstract

The study was conducted in Kansas City, Mo. A warning sign with the message left double quote Icy Bridge Ahead right double quote was installed on the westbound side of I-435 (6-lane) one-quarter mile east of the Blue River Bridge. When not in use, the sign was rotated out of the drivers' line of sight. When activated, an amber flashing light was mounted atop the sign and another on the upstream guardrail at the bridge to increase the visibility of the warning system. Types of data collected include speed measurements, traffic distribution to lane, counts of lane changes, brake light occurrences, and driver interviews.
