Abstract

More than one million crashes occur annually at traffic signals in the United States, and red light cameras increasingly are being used to supplement police-enforcement efforts by automatically photographing vehicles whose drivers run red lights. Nine intersections are evaluated and studied. A large and highly significant reduction in red light violations one year after implementation of the red light camera enforcement program is observed.
