Abstract

Educational countermeasures for the dramatic problem of youthful drinking and driving have been widely implemented and disputed. The dispute centers on the effectiveness of the countermeasures. A subtle attitude measure is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of any formal education program directed at reducing the frequency of drinking and driving. The creation of subtle attitude measures is the subject of this paper. The tests were generated as the final product of a rigorous and objective process of test development which comprised the following steps: defining criteria; developing preliminary measures; pre-testing; item validation; test refinement; and test validation. The results of this process are a useful obvious measure and useful subtle measures for determining youthful attitudes toward drinking and driving.
