Abstract

A study of 9,444 prisoner paroled from the Menard and Joliet branches of the Illinois State Penitentiary Indicates that those who were paroled to a community of the same size as the one from which they came had a lower parole violation rate than did those who were paroled to one of a different size. The explanation is based on the assumption that it is easier to adjust on parole in a familiar than it is in an unfamiliar environment.
