Thesaurus Term : Perceptual Defense

Scope note
This function of selective perception is called perceptual defense because it protects the individual from threatening or contradictory stimuli. Perceptual defense occurs when a person’s value orientations act as a barrier to stimuli that are threatening. For example, an alcoholic may avoid anti-drinking and driving campaigns in fear of what could happen because s/he knows the s/he drinks and drives sometimes. They fear what could possibly happen if they actually accepted the message.
