abstract="This article discusses the current status of road development in China and the experience of private sector participation through different schemes. Recognizing the importance of transport links to improve economic efficiency and reduce poverty, the Government of China has begun to develop a national trunk highway system that will consist of a network of 35,500 km of interprovincial express roads during the period of 1991-2010. While the Asian Development Bank is providing external assistance, an additional large financing gap still needs to be filled. Some of the private sector participation is through cooperative joint ventures, securitization, revenue bonds and build operate transfer schemes.<p />",
