abstract="Young drivers pose particular risks in traffic -- especially when they are impaired by alcohol or other drugs. Many different factors are linked to the problem of young impaired drivers: access to alcohol and drugs, access to vehicles, cultural characteristics, and the geography of a given area. In order to explore the risks posed by young impaired drivers and how these risks might be ameliorated, the Alcohol, Other Drugs, and Transportation Committee of the Transportation Research Board convened a workshop to discuss these issues as they relate to traffic safety in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. The workshop was held on June 3-4, 2008, at the National Academies’ Jonsson Conference Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. This report provides an overview of the workshop as well as the background papers prepared for the workshop. The papers are organized under the following six headings: The Nature of the Problem; Characteristics of Young Drinkers, Drivers, and Crashes; Prevention and Intervention Strategies: Laws and Regulations Affecting Traffic Safety Among Young Drivers; Prevention and Intervention Strategies: Strategies on College Campuses and in the Military; Enforcement Strategies; and Technological Approaches.<p />",
