abstract="One-officer patrols have attracted considerable attention from police administrations around the world. While the original impetus for implementation of this patrol mode was economic, data have emerged since the mid-1970s indicating that this patrol mode may be at least as effective as the traditional two-officer patrol. This article reviews these investigations, focusing upon the issues of patrol effectiveness, cost, safety, and patrol officer attitudes. Difficulties with the existing literature are identified, together with issues that require investigation.<p />",
