abstract="In the 1970s it became increasingly clear in a number of European countries that the rising traffic volume was having severe adverse effects on the multi-functional environment of urban areas. In Denmark, this recognition led to the adoption of a new functional classification of the urban traffic network and to the introduction of speed classification. As a means for managing car speed, the traffic calming concept was developed and introduced into the design process.<p />",
