abstract="Gates designed to allow passage of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) in only one direction were tested under controlled and field conditions. Two gate types had significantly (P < 0.02) different frequencies of use under controlled conditions. Eight gates of the type deemed most effective were installed in 8-foot (2.44-m) fences adjacent to Interstate Highway 70 near Vail, Colorado. A total of 558 passages were recorded through these gates during 1970-72 and 96 percent of these were in the one-way direction for which the gate was designed. Based on track counts, we estimated these gates permitted about 223 deer to escape the immediate highway right-of-way.<p />",
