abstract="After a decade in which morality rates remained almost stagnant, mortality rates suddenly began to improve in the 1970s and these improvement have continue into the 1980s. The change which took place in the 1970s was revolutionary in the sense that the greater proportion of the increase in expectation of life at birth was due to mortality improvements at ages over 50. Improvements in the past were always primarily the result of mortality decline at younger ages.<p />",
