abstract="Over-dosage and poly-drug intoxications are often the cause of bringing patients to the emergency rooms in hospitals. Most of the cases are intentional, only part of them being due to non-compliant treatment or individual reaction of the patient to a specific drug (generally, taken without medical advice). The present study aims to compare the etiology of the intoxicated patients brought at the emergency hospitals in two different Romanian towns, Bucharest and Timisoara, in an attempt to find the “pattern” of intoxications in big Romanian cities. The present study was open, retrospective and used the medical evidence of the intoxication cases cared in 2007 in the AIC Department at Timisoara Clinical County Hospital and the statistics of intoxications treated at Floreasca Emergency Hospital Bucharest between 2000 and 2006. The investigated parameters were gender, age and chemical agent that caused the intoxication. The results pointed out that the most frequent intoxications were below 30 years old in women and between 20 to 40 years old for men. The most frequent agents resulting in acute intoxications were the co-administration of medicines in both men and women, followed by benzodiazepines and barbiturates in women, and ethanol or ethanol plus medicines in men.",
