abstract="In a nationwide study, the authors investigated the place of group work in skilled nursing facilities. A survey questionnaire focusing on: (a) educational, (b) support, and (c) therapy/counseling groups, was sent to the directors of social service departments. Results indicated that the majority of the 304 respondents offered each type of group. The majority of facilities also held educational and support groups for family members, but only two-fifths offered therapy or counseling groups. The findings showed that across all types of groups, social service staff (60% of whom had a social work degree) were the most likely facilitators. Professional and environmental issues, along with other group factors relating to residents and their families are addressed. Implications for practice and research conclude this study.<p />",
