abstract="Prior research has treated the decision to affiliate with the military reserves as similar to the labor force decision to moonlight. This study attempts to determine whether individuals seeking second jobs treat the civilian and military sectors as competing segments of the secondary labor market. A multinomial logit model is developed in which the mutually exclusive set of labor force alternatives for full-time workers includes moonlighting, participating in the reserves, or holding one primary job. The model is estimated using a “choice-based” sample. The empirical results reject the null hypothesis that the determinants of second job participation are identical for reservists and civilians. However, individuals do appear to choose between the two second job sectors on the basis of relative compensation and local labor market conditions.<p />",
