abstract="The 1990 exercise objectives for older adults devel- oped by the Public Health Service (PHs) are twofold: (1) 50% of adults are 65 years and older should be engaged in appropriate phys- ical activity, and (2) the proportion of adults who can accurately identify the variety and duration of exercise thought to promote most effectively cardiovascular fitness should be greater than 70%. Pre- liminary findings from the 1985 National Health Promotion inter- view Survey paint a very pessimistic picture for the attainment of these objectives. However, there is growing criticism of the PHs Objectives as bein8 too lofty and ina propriately conceived. This article discusses t h ~ s debate and inch f es implications that may fol- low for exercise leaders who dcsign physical activity programs for older adults.<p />",
