abstract="Specific nostalgic music appears to reach all geriatric patients including clients who cannot be reached by any other known modality. The milieu for music therapy is a happy, cheerful environment that is pressure-free and carefree. The music therapist is a nonthreatening protective figure who assumes a supportive role with patients. Due to the therapist's role and the psychologically gratifying nostalgic songs, the patients project the therapist as a warm, maternal person. Music therapy also has impact on nursing home staff members and acts as a morale builder. Music cheers the staff and they may be more effective in their work performance.<p />",
