abstract="<p>This article examines and outlines the world experience in mandatory seat belt usage. Compliance with the mandatory law has increased the usage from 10 percent voluntary use to almost 90 percent in some countries. Occupant restraint technology has advanced considerably during the last two decades improving its performance and comfort. Thirty-five countries have mandatory seat belt laws and they have achieved significant decrease both in serious injuries and fatalities with a considerable economic impact. Seat belt effectiveness has stood the test of time and it is the least expensive as a protective measure against fatal casualties. Car occupant fatalities have been reduced by an average of 40 percent in front seat occupants and 70 percent in rear seat passengers, if restrained.</p>",
