abstract="
The theory of "inner models" is described as it relates to driving behaviour. A product of cognitive psychology, "inner models" are mental representations of information procured by the subject and upon which complex decisions are based. Four assumptions of the theory are listed and evidence supporting them described. Accidents involving both experienced and inexperienced drivers i.e. those with and those without well developed inner models, are investigated and discusssed. Type of accident is shown to be related to degree of experience. The use of the theory in the Finnish driver training system is described. A pilot test, in which some pupils receiving training which developed their "hierachy of internal models", showed that such pupils performed better than the control group.
",
