abstract="In order to determine the safety aspects of four wheel drive off-road vehicles used in the Danish Armed Forces, all recorded accidents involving these from 1980 to 1985 were reviewed. During this period three kinds of vehicles of this description were in service: Two Jeeps, the M38A1 and the M151A1, and various Land-Rover models. In all 320 accidents were recorded, 48 of these involving 73 casualties, of which 3 were fatalities. The Jeep types were found to dominate the accidents with casualties, roll-over accidents figuring prominently. Seat-belts were shown to be of value in roll-over accidents, too. The abolishment of the Jeep types, restriction of the Land-Rover to closed-canopy driving and the substitution of Jeeps and Land-Rovers by the Mercedes-Benz 240GD, which already is in service, for top-down tactical driving conditions is recommended.<p />",
