abstract="Historically, crash databases have been used to identify crash causation, and controlled experimental studies have been used to determine human behavior and populate driver models. Naturalistic Driving Data is a relatively new tool that has the potential to greatly improve transportation safety by providing new insights into crash causation and driver behavior. Large-scale naturalistic driving studies are being planned in the light- and heavy-vehicle arenas in the United States, Sweden, Europe, Japan, and other countries. As these studies become more common, new challenges arise for transportation professionals and researchers on how to effectively access and use these data. For example, the upcoming SHRP2 Naturalistic Driving Study is expected to result in a petabyte of raw data storage and contain 4000 years of driving data.<p />",
