abstract="Twelve roadside surveys with a total of 43 single controls were conducted in 5 communities in the southern part of Finland. The surveys were conducted by the same team on Friday and Saturday nights during the spring and summertime 1978. All passing motor vehicles were controlled by the police and 2,074 drivers were breathalyzed with Alcolmeter and 500 of them randomly interviewed. A positive alcohol result was obtained for 1.7% of all drivers. In 6 cases (0.3%) the blood alcohol result was between 0.50 and 1.50 per mille and in 5 cases (0.2%) it exceeded 1.50 per mille. The present results suggest that the incidence of drunken driving also during the high-seasonal time seems to be quite low in the examined areas of Finland. Driver interviews revealed that on average 41% knew exactly the statutory blood alcohol limits and 56% did not have any idea of the penalties for drunken driving.<p />",
