abstract="At the 1993 seminar of the International Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialists, testing was performed on Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) equipped vehicles. Data was collected by the Minnesota State Patrol for later distribution to the membership. In the analysis of this data, it was discovered that when an ABS-equipped vehicle was braking while in an evasive-type maneuver, it resulted in very little loss of speed and subsequently a collision. The Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit conducted its own testing on September 29, 1993, at the Camp Grayling airfield in Grayling, Michigan. Extensive discussion between members of the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit took place as a result of testing. The general consensus was that a tire can only do so much. If some of the available tire/road friction force is allocated toward turning the wheels, less is available to stop the vehicle.<p />",
