abstract="In 1997, a severe ice storm paralyzed the cities of Florence and Sheffield, Alabama, making the 4-lane, 2,000-foot-long O'Neal Bridge over the Tennessee River impassable. In response, in order to prevent this problem from recurring, the Alabama Department of Transportation will install a deicing/anti-icing system on the O'Neal Bridge. The system will monitor the weather during winter months and automatically dispense a deicing agent when conditions arise, thus keeping the flow of traffic between the 2 cities moving under all weather conditions.<p />",
