abstract="This article describes the winter Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS), including its development and deployment as part of a winter demonstration project in Iowa. The tool provides a subset of weather parameters such as forecast values of air and road temperatures, precipitation start and stop times, precipitation types, and accumulation amounts. The MDSS generates road treatment recommendations that are based on information provided by its own weather forecasts. It provides guidance on application times and rates for materials, as well as presenting scenarios where outcomes based on changing the application type, times and rate can be generated.<p />",
