abstract="A new anti-icing device, called Fixed Automated Spray Technology, employs information generated by road weather information systems (RWIS), which predict when a road will become icy, and are programmed to spray chemicals immediately in advance of icing conditions. The device uses potassium acetate, which is non-corrosive to concrete and steel and has less impact on the environment than salts. A version of the system, implemented near Prescott, Ontario, was shown to be effective; there were no weather-related accidents the winter after it was installed, even though that winter was much harsher than the previous ones.<p />",
