abstract="This article examines some elements of programs to improve roadway safety in light of the anticipated rise in the number of older drivers. Traffic safety procedures and products that assist older drivers include use of new reflective sheeting for traffic signs that make them easier to see at night and from wide angles. Roadway markings are another area, because the first element of vision to deteriorate is sharpness and ability to see high-contrast detail. Wider edge lines, new marking materials and wider markings are among the elements to enhance safety for older drivers. Fluorescent yellow- green signs at pedestrian crossings are being phased in after recommendations for their use by the FHWA. Special reflective sheeting is also being recommended for construction zones.<p />",
