abstract="A recent report on a Canadian project to find ways to prolong the life of city sidewalks may shed some light on the issue. The report offers preliminary observations taken from data provided by the Canadian cities of Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, and Camrose. A qualitative assessment indicates that the extent of longitudinal sidewalk damage increases when the sidewalks are founded on soils with a high plasticity index. The analyses of vertical movements of sidewalks showed that the rigid body movements (both uniform vertical movement and tilt) are mainly a consequence of frost penetration beneath the sidewalk.<p />",
