abstract="Local area traffic management (LATM) and traffic calming are tools that have been in use in Australia since the early 1970s. The aim was to encourage safer and more environmentally acceptable use of the road system by vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. A key objective of traffic calming is to encourage traffic to operate in a manner consistent with the adjacent land use planning and the intended purposes of the street network. This article examines the importance of maintaining balance between the planning of road networks and land use and community input to achieve traffic calming that satisfies the needs of all concerned. Traffic circles, as a successful means of traffic calming, are also discussed.<p />",
