abstract="This article looks at the state of Maryland's use of high technology to manage traffic and information on its highways. Maryland's command station sits within one of a group of buildings located in Hanover, Maryland, an Anne Arundel County suburb near Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Highway and law-enforcement personnel use a number of technologies to remotely monitor, observe and inform vehicular traffic on the area's most congested highways. One goal behind this federally-funded facility is to prove that optimizing the efficiency of highways already in place does make more sense than simply building more lane miles. If the concept works as envisioned, many hundreds of millions of dollars will be saved.<p />",
