abstract="This article identifies the critical components of an effective winter maintenance management system. These include: 1) a reliable road weather information system (RWIS); 2) the availability of resource utilization and scheduling information in a manageable format; and, 3) the availability of data collected from vehicles during various operations. The three components are managed through a winter maintenance command center or &quot;snow desk&quot;, which can function as either a centralized or decentralized operation. The article cites a brief example of a winter maintenance management system created by the Ministry of Transportation of Denmark. The article concludes with a discussion of how a database containing information on the various components can serve as the starting point for an effective winter maintenance management system.<p />",
