abstract="This article gives an overview of the Slow for the Cone Zone highway safety campaign in California. Studies have shown that accidents in work zones involving motorists have dropped by at least 25 percent in areas where the Slow for the Cone Zone program has been active. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) received a $3.6 million federal grant to expand its already successful program to a larger statewide audience over the next two years. An advertising campaign is promoting the program in areas such as highway information advertisements, newspapers, and television stations. In addition, communication relayed through the California Highway Information Network (CHIN) and the Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) contain messages promoting the program. Four pilot studies are also being considered by Caltrans. These will focus on new campaign slogan signs in work zones, as well as vehicle speed feedback signs.<p />",
